Lausanne III Anniversary

by Al Tizon

Last year around this time, I was in Cape Town, South Africa, for the third Congress on World Evangelization. Since then, regional meetings have convened, statements have been released, and assessments of the Lausanne movement as a whole have been given. Executive Chairman Doug Birdsall reflects on the past year and invites those who were in attendance to share any newsworthy developments since Lausanne III. As for me, I continue to find myself "ambiguously hopeful" about the movement—if that makes any sense! C. Rene Padilla, one of the catalysts for holistic mission at the first Congress in 1974, reflects well both myaffirmations and critiques of the movement. Padilla's classic Mission in Between the Times, which I reviewed in the 2011 issue of Witness, was updated and made available at the third Congress.
